First Observations of G‐Band Radar Doppler Spectra

چکیده
The first Doppler spectra ever acquired by an atmospheric radar at 200 GHz (G-band) are presented. observations were taken during a light precipitation event in May (rain rates <2 mm hr−1) Chilbolton Observatory, UK, with coincident Ka-band and W-band measurements. collected rain agree Mie theory predictions: G-band they show significant reductions the spectral power return—as compared to theoretical Rayleigh scattering—corresponding high velocities (i.e., large raindrops) presence of multiple peaks “Mie notches” correspondence maxima minima raindrop backscattering cross sections. two troughs correspond smaller velocities/sizes than notch. These features offered radars pave way toward applying, rain, notch vertical wind retrievals multifrequency drop size distribution microphysical characteristic sizes before.

Ensemble Assimilation of Doppler Radar Observations
The final goal of this project is to provide the US Navy with an increased capability of using Doppler radar observations in the detection and prediction of hazardous weather events that usually have a strong randomness in nature and affect the Navy operations, especially over oceans and in remote areas. By developing a high-resolution data assimilation capability that can effectively assimilat...
متن کاملUse of Doppler Radar in Meteorological Observations
The U.S. IVeather Bureau has been experimenting with a radar operating on the Doppler principle t o dc%ermine whether apparatus of this type would detect and uniquely identify tornadoes. The principles of Doppler radar as applied to meteorology and results of recent experiment,s with equipment of this type are discussed. Calculations of anomalous wind speeds of 206 m.p.h. in a funnel cloud and ...
متن کاملCloud radar Doppler spectra in drizzling stratiform clouds: 2. Observations and microphysical modeling of drizzle evolution
[1] In part I, the influence of cloud microphysics and dynamics on the shape of cloud radar Doppler spectra in warm stratiform clouds was discussed. The traditional analysis of radar Doppler moments was extended to include skewness and kurtosis as additional descriptors of the Doppler spectrum. Here, a short climatology of observed Doppler spectra moments as a function of the radar reflectivity...
